The first step to solving a problem is to define it - its very nature, scope as to the pain, inconveniences and losses that it causes. Problems that seem simple can have complex causes and roots.
For example, in the case of a number of daily preventable deaths of more than 10 infants and children due to diarrhea - universal access to clean & safe drinking water seems the simple solution. But what seems the solution is a greater problem in itself.
Ultimately, it is rooted in the greed and lack of conscience of most of our national and local officials that can be blamed - the very root causes of the problems. They steal public funds in the total amount that can afford the government to spend for near universal access to safe & clean drinking water and universal access to essential health care facilities.
A problem with what seem as elaborate, complex and expensive solutions can have a surprisingly simple solution - we discovered. For example, we believe we prevented the deaths of a few persons merely because of our very presence in a place. But it caused us financial losses, now that's another story.

Because unless you care about others, about those not in position to give you any kind of favor ever - hardly can you labor to incorporate positive social impact as one of the guiding principles when solving personal, community, organizational problems.
And those enjoying good lives, by human nature, are mostly not inclined to give a damn, really. Unless it can make them look good, like some reactive celebrities.
